The Foods We Hate
I have had some gut-wrenching conversations with friends lately about the foods we hate to eat. We all have that food that one time or another has burned our souls to the core. You know the ones I mean, the ones that even mentioning the name will cause you to go green in the face, cause your throat to tighten up, and get your gag reflex kicked into overdrive. It’s funny how one person’s gross-out food is another person’s favorite dish. I sent out a questionnaire on Facebook to get a good start on this project. We are going to try to find the top 10 grossest foods out there. Below is a list of foods submitted, so far, by followers of this blog, The Manly Housewife Facebook page, and some personal friends. Help us out by adding your comments below listing your most hated food and why you hate it. Once we have reached enough ideas, we will follow this post up with a poll to determine the Top 10 grossest foods.
- Goulash
- Pickles
- Circus Peanuts
- Spam
- Brussels Sprouts
- Bananas
- Spaghetti-O’s
- Caviar
- Liver & Onions
- Okra
- Corn
- Oatmeal
- Garbanzo Beans
- Cauliflower
- Fishy Things
- Bugs Covered in Chocolate
Now we just need help adding to the list. Don’t forget to tell us why you hate your particular hate food. Here are some responses from Facebook:
“Spaghetti-O’s…mega gross! Caviar…BARF!”
“Goulash (the thought of the word makes me gag!)”
“Corn….how can you like a food that goes out the same as it came in….”
“I could go with Spam too…but worst ever, any bugs chocolate coated or not…so not a food group for me”

Funny list! I love liver! I used to seriously gag on tomatoes but now I love them. I know I’ll probably make enemies by saying this but I don’t like goat cheese!!
If you do not like okra because of the slime factor, do NOT be tricked into trying sea urchin at your favorite sushi joint. You’ve been warned! (HORRIBLE!!)
Who could hate garbanzo beans? A little salt, a lot more salt, and some salt, and they’re delicious
I love nine out of 16. I must be weird.
The grossest food is an olive. Hands down.
Great idea! I left a comment about my most hated food on the facebook page!
Haha, love this post. It’s so funny how people’s tastes are different. I love bananas, but hate pickles! PS, I have a giveaway on my blog right now that I think you might be interested in! Stop by to check it out
Great idea. I have two things:
Mustard – this stems from my older brother’s love and his subsequent teasing of me using the condiment. What started out as a mere dislike turned into horror at the stuff even getting near me.
Manjar – So, manjar is a Chilean food that is kind of like dulce de leche and made in a similar fashion. It’s much thicker, very intense, and even a little bitter. It’s generally used the same way as dulce de leche–in and on sweets. Before I lived in Chile, I had no idea it was. Upon tasting it, I had to spit it out it was so sickly sweet and odd tasting. To this day, I have a visceral reaction when I think about it.Ughh.
I like 5 foods on that list… my major food I don’t eat is hot dogs, it is a serious food aversion (not that I mind having a food aversion to hot dogs!)
From your list only 5 things are yucky to me. I would have to add broccoli – I know most folks love it, but the smell of cooked broccoli just doesn’t do it for me.
Hilarious! Although, I disagree on a few. You obviously haven’t tried MY brussel sprouts–sauted in beer and bacon!
I actually like most of the items on this list.
Mine would be microwave Butter-flavored popcorn. The smell alone would have me running away from the room–yuck!
Love the list! I am writing something really similar for tomorrow. My number one – Bean Sprouts- they are SO gross!
